Meet the Biden Extended Family

On January 20, President-elect Joe Biden will be sworn into office and begin his term as the 46th president of the United States of America. He is known as a family man, but who exactly are the children and grandchildren of the next president?

Biden married Neilia Biden née Hunter, a school teacher in the Syracuse City School District, in 1966. The couple had three children: Beau, born in 1969; Hunter, born in 1970; and Naomi, born in 1971. Both Neilia and Naomi died in a tragic car accident in 1972. Beau and Hunter were critically injured in the crash, but both survived.

Biden remarried Dr. Jill Biden née Jacobs, an English and reading teacher, in 1977, making her Beau and Hunter’s stepmother. In 1981, the couple’s daughter, Ashley, was born. Dr. Biden stopped working for two years to raise the three children. She was the first known Second Lady to have an outside job while in the role, and will be the first First Lady to do so as well.

Hunter married Kathleen Biden née Buhle in 1993. The two have three children together: Naomi, born in 1993; Finnegan, born in 2000; and Maisy, born in 2001. Hunter and Kathleen separated in 2015 and divorced in 2017. Hunter is also the father of a child born to Lunden Alexis Roberts in 2018. In May 2019, Hunter remarried Melissa Cohen, a South African filmmaker, with whom he had a son born in March.

Beau married Hallie Biden née Olivere in 2002. The couple had two children, Natalie, born in 2004 and Robert, born in 2006. Beau passed away in 2015 after a five-year battle with brain cancer. At his funeral, he was awarded the Legion of Merit Award for his services in the Iraq War.
